West Papua hopeful for full membership

solomonstarnews.com, Published: 13 July 2016

Indonesian province of West Papua is hopeful to see their full membership plea in the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG), advance during this 4th Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF) summit hosted in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

Speaking to the media yesterday spokesperson for the United Liberation Movement for West Paupua (ULMWP) Benny Wenda said they are optimistic to see the struggle of their people advance to the next level, within the MSG.

He said their ongoing campaign and struggle for support from the Melanesian countries and the pacific will help them advance their membership status in the MSG, which is fundamental to their wish to become an independent state.

ULMWP acquired their observer status in MSG last year during the MSG meeting held in Honiara, thus they are hopeful to see their status in this sub-regional organisation advanced to full membership.

Wenda stressed their struggle is not for them but for the future generation of West Papua, who will be free from brutality and bloodshed continued to be suffered on the hands of the Indonesian military.

West Papua Issue is NOT Just About Being “Pity” with Melanesians in West Papua

West Papua Issues is NOT Only about Melanesian brothers and sisters across the South Pacific to feel sorry and pity about the human suffering occurring in the Western half of New Guinea Island since the invasion and occupation of the territory by Indonesian nation-state since 1961. General Mathias Wenda the Commander in Chief of the West Papua Revolutionary Army (WPRA) says,

West Papua issue is not just regarding those of us Melanesians who were born and grown up in West Papua as being suffering from Indonesian invasion and occupation. It is more than that. It is to do with our common goal, shared fate, shared future, the common destiny of “Melanesia” as a human society in the South Pacific Region. The modernisation project has brought about catastrophic consequences on us in our region, but it does not mean we blame anybody or anything. It means, we as human beings, as human society, should stand up, think about, discusses, speak up, and act upon steps towards saving our own future.

General Wenda continues,

We are not talking about economic development, regional security and stability, nor pleasing Indonesia and the Western interests in the Pacific Rim. We are not talking about what is prosperity and how to achieve it. We are talking about the very survival or our Melaneisan race in our region. We are talking about the future of own children and grand-children. We are talking about hundreds of years to come. Yes, we hsave to be ready to accept that some of the islands in our region will sink. Of course, global warming is a reality that we must not regret but should anticipate from now on. Yes, this is why the Suva Declaration on Climate Change has the rightful Melanesian spirit, as it is directly to do with our own future. When we do sit down ourselves as Melanesians, without western and Asian interests and influences, then we can see we have our wisdom aired and decisions made addressing the “real needs” and “strategic issues” of Melanesian peoples and the South Pacific Region.

General Wenda also emphasizes that besides MSG as the regional body under the Pacific Island Forum (PIF), involving parties outside Melanesians, Micronesians and Polynesians, our Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF) is established on our own interest, to deal with our own issues.  PIDF is the native “Melanesian organisation”, that we needs to raise and nurture for our own sake.

Unity among Melanesians as a family is the key towards “Good News” for our future generations. We should not be fooled by security issues, regional peace issues, development issues that are being aired by Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia. We need to think first of all about “our own existence” in the coming 100 – 200 years in our small islands before we talk about wealth and prosperity, peace and justice, development and modernisation.

General Wenda maintains that New Guinea Island is the homeland of all Melanesians,

This Island is our Island, out future, out home, our fate is based on this Island. We should not allow foreigners occupy and exploit, take over and wipe our our Melanesian race. If this happens, then where will al Melanesians go? Australia? Sorry but our Aboriginal brothers and sisters have been occupied. They have no power to make decisions when anything happens to our small islands.

Our only hope is the Isle of New Guinea. Anytime, in the future, when anything happens in our small islands, every Melanesian man and woman knows that each of us has our big home-land, that is, the Isle of New Guinea. It is time now, to wisely and strategically prepare for our future generations, by saving West Papua for our own sake. Before we regret, before our children regret, before our grand-children put curse upon us for not acting wisely now, let us be wise, let us make up our minds in the spirit of Melanesia wisdom, in Melanesia way, based on Melanesia beliefs and philosophy.

Yes, we Melanesians in West Papua are being continuously killed, being systematically, structurally, and extensively being wiped out under the Indonesian project called “Pan-Pacific Rim of Great Indonesia” designed by Soekarno and Ali Murtopo in 1960s. Papua New Guinea is diplomaticall, not politically, fully under Indonesian control right now, by employing Indonesian strategy called “fear-and-terror” and conquer. In not long time to come, Papua New Guinea will be occupied diplomatically by Indonesia.

That is why, we are now, I am now, General Mathias Wenda, asking not for all Melanesian leaders not to feel pity about us Melanesians in West Papua. Let us take what is happening in West Papua as a “waking-up alarm” for all Melanesian leaders, to strategically think, tactically plan, and wisely act to save our Melanesian fate, politically, socially, culturally, and more importantly environmentally.

Fiji PM Calls For Regional Cooperation In Promoting Green Blue Economy

Bainimarama says regional organizations should have clear, distinct mandates

By Matilda Simmons

SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, July 14, 2016) – Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has called on members of the Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF) to work together in advancing the Green Blue Economy for the Pacific.

“The transition to a Green Blue Economy is a long-term challenge, and we, and the rest of the world, will need to persevere and spare no effort as we move towards more efficient use and conservation of natural resources and greater respect for our beloved ocean,” said Mr Bainimarama during the official handing over the role of chairman to the Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, at the PIDF Leaders’ Summit in Honiara yesterday.

Mr Bainimarama said the United Nations had confirmed the PIDF’s registration of its charter, which would pave the way for the PIDF to participate in all UN processes and meetings.

“PIDF is now at a turning point. It is now equipped with a strong professional team that should get the organisation to the next step,” he said.

“The process is long, but there will be great rewards as we move forward. We need to remember where we come from and what we are made of,” he said.

With the evolution of the Framework of Pacific Regionalism, Mr Bainimarama said it wasn’t in the best interest of PIDF to have overlapping roles with other agencies and that the roles of these agencies were clearly defined to avoid competition.

“There are many groups all trying to do good work and we should not be running into each other or duplicating effort. And we certainly don’t need competition. This is a collective responsibility and a common cause for the Pacific people.”

Mr Bainimarama congratulated the new PIDF chairman on the new journey of the organisation.

Pacific appeal to the world’s conscience: West Papua Supports Fiji PM’s Speech at PIDF Summit

Pacific appeal to the world’s conscience is the theme that all Melanesian leaders should agree and promote. From West Papua, sharing with Papua New Guinea as the Second Largest Island on Earth, supports the efforts on limiting (global) temperature rise to 1.5 Degrees Centigrade as stated in ‘Suva Declaration on Climate Change’ which became a Pacific appeal to the world’s conscience.

From the Office of Gen. TRWP Mathias Wenda, as the Commander in Chief of the West Papua Revolutionary Army (WPRA), the Secretary-General Lt. Gen. Amunggut Tabi says,

West Papua issue is not just about human rights and security, regional stability and peace, it is more about out Melanesian future, the future of the South Pacific. We need to question ‘Where will we go, what are we Melanesians going to do when the sea level arises, when Western half of our Melaneisan-Island (New Guinea) is already occupied and taken over by Malayo-Indonesia?‘ and we need to be clever, speak for our own future generations. We have our independent nation-states, but our small-island states are under threat of global warming. We need to secure the Isle of New Guinea as our Island for our future generations.

Gen. Tabi also reiterates Gen. Wenda’s message that nobody from out there will become our day-time or night-time or morning-time saviors.  We must stand-up for ourselves and for our future generations, and we must stand up together, united as One Melanesian Family, under the umbrella of the ‘Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF)’. Gen. Tabi continues,

We cannot wait, and if we do, there will never be anybody from heavens or earth come to Melanesia to speak on our behalf and on behalf of our future generations. It is our own, primary duty as the parents to begin thinking and acting upon the call for world conscience.

This is why, the Draft Constitution of the Republic of West Papua says the primary goal of West Papua independence is not economic, social nor political one, but it is environmental, holistic one for the sake of Papuans and Melanesians as human society with all other beings that share our islands, waters and skies.

The two WPRA generals also calls on all Melanesian leaders to think more based on Melanesian Wisdom, Melanesian Philosophy and Melanesian Way of Dealing with life issues. They said,

We are rigt now dragged into thinking, talking and acting more for the sake of economic goals. We are dragged into the global modernisation project that sacrifices  our own way of living, way of thinking and way of doing things for our own survival and progress.

With the statement of the Fiji Prime Minister, Gen. Tabi expresses his gratitude, on behalf of West Papuan peoples and all communities of beings in the Isle of New Guinea, that this Melanesian wisdom should be fully supported by all Melanesian leaders, be guarded and promoted, not only for our Melanesia future, but also for the sake of life on this planet. Tabi says, Fiji Prime Minister already said we should,

“be an example for the world. Ironically, our efforts and our leadership will not just be for our benefit in the future, they will be for the benefit for the entire planet.”
